What We Do

The Altadena Fire Brigade is building a trained, equipped, and disciplined volunteer wildfire organization dedicated to protecting Altadena and strengthening the community’s ability to prepare for and respond to wildfire.

Our work begins long before an emergency. We train volunteers, reduce wildfire risks, prepare residents, and build the partnerships needed to support safe and coordinated emergency operations.

Training and Operational Readiness

We recruit and develop volunteer firefighters through structured wildland fire training, physical readiness, hands-on skills development, and recognized fire-service standards. Our objective is to develop competent personnel capable of safely operating within the Incident Command System and alongside professional fire-service partners.

Our members train in wildland fire behavior, hand-tool operations, hose deployment, communications, crew organization, incident command, and safety. Readiness is maintained through continuing education, drills, physical conditioning, equipment inspections, and field exercises.

Prevention and Community Preparedness

We work within Altadena to reduce wildfire risk before an emergency occurs. This includes supporting defensible-space efforts, vegetation and fuel reduction, community mitigation projects, home-hardening education, and the identification of wildfire hazards.

We also help residents understand wildfire risk and prepare for emergencies through evacuation preparedness, emergency planning, defensible-space awareness, and community outreach.

Emergency Support and Future Firefighters

AFB is developing the personnel, equipment, qualifications, policies, and agency relationships needed to provide organized wildfire and emergency support when requested and authorized. During emergency operations, our goal is to integrate into established incident command and support the agencies having jurisdiction, never operate outside of them.

AFB also provides an entry point for community members, veterans, and aspiring firefighters who want to serve while developing real fire-service knowledge, discipline, physical readiness, and professional qualifications. We aim to create a pathway from community volunteer service into advanced wildland fire responsibilities and professional fire-service careers.

The work starts here.
